Many women experience sexual problems, such as having a low sex drive, an inability to achieve orgasm or pain during intercourse. Reasons for these and similar issues may include changing hormone levels, pregnancy and childbirth, medication side effects and an underlying illness.

Understanding Sexual Dysfunction in Women

Sexual dysfunction affects an estimated 19-50% of women at some point during their lives. This highly prevalent issue interferes with a woman’s ability to experience sexual desire, arousal or orgasms, or it can make her experience sex as painful and uncomfortable. To be considered a dysfunction, these symptoms also need to be distressing to the woman and occur over 75% of the time and over a 6-month period.

The group that’s usually affected are women in their post-menopausal years, i.e., those 51 years and older. However, sexual dysfunction doesn’t discriminate and can affect any woman of any age and background.

There are many physical and psychosocial reasons why women of all ages may struggle sexually. That’s because sexuality is complex, involving your hormones, nerves and blood vessels as well as emotions, attitudes and overall health. When there is an issue in any of these, sexual health and wellness suffer. Luckily, there are effective ways to restore sexual wellness. And while some women benefit from first addressing the underlying causes of their problem, others can opt to enhance their sexual well-being through minimally invasive procedures.

How the O-Shot Can Help

One minimally invasive procedure that has proven efficient when it comes to female sexual wellness is the Orgasm Shot®, also popularly called the O-Shot. This simple procedure involves injecting PRP isolated from your own blood into specific areas of the vagina and vulva to encourage tissue regeneration and enhance vascularization. The result is improved sexual functioning as marked by:

  • Greater sexual desire
  • Stronger arousal
  • Better lubrication
  • Stronger orgasms
  • More frequent orgasms
  • Enhanced ability for vaginal orgasms
  • Less pain during intercourse
  • Reduction in stress incontinence
  • Improvement in vulvar skin texture
  • Tighter vaginal opening

A form of regenerative medicine, PRP therapy was traditionally used to treat sports injuries, non-healing wounds and certain medical conditions. To develop the PRP preparation, doctors first draw blood from the patient. Platelets are then separated from other blood components and concentrated during centrifugation. The reason platelets are chosen for this form of therapy is because they contain hundreds of powerful proteins called growth factors, which play a big part in healing.

The use of PRP has now expanded to include the enhancement of sexual health and functioning in women through the O-Shot. This treatment was developed by Dr. Charles Runels, whose research showed that injecting PRP into specific areas of the vulva and vagina affects a woman’s sexual functioning.

The O-Shot can also treat urinary stress incontinence, a common problem that many women experience due to aging, pregnancy and childbirth. Stress incontinence is leakage associated with laughing, sneezing and physical activity, but the O-Shot helps by regenerating the vaginal tissues to strengthen the pelvic floor and provide the bladder with more support.

Who Is the Ideal O-Shot Candidate?

Usual candidates for the O-Shot are post-menopausal women who are experiencing signs of sexual dysfunction. The O-Shot can address some of the most common causes of sexual dysfunction affecting women in their post-menopausal years:

  • Vulvovaginal atrophy (or thinning of the genital tissues)
  • Vaginal dryness and loss of elasticity
  • Decreased blood flow to the genitals
  • Stress urinary incontinence

However, women of any age can benefit from getting the O-Shot if they are struggling with reduced desire, arousal problems or infrequent orgasms. This is especially true for women whose sexual dysfunction may be due to changes in vaginal sensation as a result of fluctuating hormones, childbirth or a medical condition.

Who Should Not Get the O-Shot?

The O-Shot is safe and effective for most women. However, pregnant and breastfeeding women will need to postpone getting treatment. We don’t know whether this treatment is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you have had adverse reactions to this treatment before, have a history of severe allergic reactions or an active infection around the treatment site, you may not be a good candidate.

Patients who are not good candidates for the O-Shot can seek out alternatives at our office, such as bio-identical hormone therapy, exosomes or Tempsure Vitalia.

How the O-Shot Improves Overall Health and Wellness

The O-Shot is a simple, in-office procedure in which healing components from your own body are used for vaginal rejuvenation. This treatment encourages the development and growth of healthy tissue in the vulvovaginal area, including the development of healthy blood vessels. Together, these changes increase sensitivity in all the right areas, enhance normal sexual responsiveness and set the stage for better orgasms.

Beyond sexual health, the O-Shot may improve your overall health and wellness. Sexual well-being is an important aspect of health. Having a satisfying sex life boosts confidence levels and improves mood. It also makes us feel connected to our partners, which reduces stress levels, protecting our overall health and well-being. By improving the symptoms of urinary incontinence, the O-Shot can also reduce embarrassment caused by leaking.

The O-Shot Experience

The O-Shot is a quick, in-office treatment that requires little preparation, involves no downtime and has little to no side effects. Results become noticeable within weeks and last for a long time. Overall, getting the O-Shot is a comfortable and exciting experience for many of our clients. Here is what you can expect:

How to Prepare for Treatment

The O-Shot is a simple, in-office procedure that does not require much preparation. However, because this treatment involves blood draws and injections, we recommend having a meal and being well-hydrated before treatment. This is to minimize fainting and dizziness. And if you are afraid of needles, learning about relaxation techniques before treatment may help.

With any procedure that involves puncturing the skin and veins, there is a small risk of bruising and bleeding. To reduce this risk, we strongly advise you to avoid medications and supplements that are known to thin the blood. Examples of things to avoid include aspirin, NSAIDs, fish oil, vitamin E and turmeric.

You may also want to shave the treatment area a day before your scheduled appointment. Another good idea is to empty your bladder shortly before treatment begins and to wear loose-fitting clothing.

What to Expect During Treatment

The O-Shot treatment starts with a consultation at our San Jose office. Dr. Dhar will discuss your concerns, review your medical history and walk you through the treatment. If we deem you to be a good candidate, we will set an appointment and provide instructions.

During your scheduled appointment, you will need to undress from the waist down. Your provider will then apply a topical numbing cream to the vaginal area to minimize discomfort. While the numbing cream takes effect, a small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm to isolate the PRP. Your provider will then inject the PRP solution near the clitoris and G-spot, as well as into the vaginal mucosa and labia minora and majora.

The whole treatment takes approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. Despite needles being involved, you will not feel any pain thanks to the numbing cream. However, some women may feel mild pinching or stinging. After treatment, you can get back to your usual routine.

While most of our patients notice improvement after a single treatment, some need two injections spaced eight weeks apart. Follow-up visits every 18 months to three years are necessary to maintain results.

What to Expect After Treatment: The Results

The treatment area may feel slightly numb immediately after treatment. However, the sensation returns within half an hour as the topical anesthetic wears off. Other than that, side effects are rare or mild. These may include urinary urgency, mild spotting and a feeling of fullness in the vaginal area.

As far as the results go, it can take up to three weeks for the effects of this treatment to become noticeable since tissue growth from PRP takes time. Most patients experience the full effect of treatment after three months. The effects of this treatment should last for at least 18 months, and some women report improvement in sexual functioning for up to three years.

Your results, however, depend on how your body responds to PRP. Since every woman is different, the response to treatment tends to vary.

FAQs

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The O-Shot uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) taken from the blood to accelerate cell renewal in the clitoris and vagina to thicken the vaginal wall, stimulate lubrication, and reduce discomfort associated with intercourse. The thicker tissue also works to improve sensitivity, stimulation and arousal—as well as support the urethra to reduce issues of stress incontinence.

IS IT SAFE?

So far, the O-Shot seems to have a good safety profile, at least according to research carried out by its inventor. While the treatment has not been FDA-cleared since the FDA does not regulate blood-derived products, the equipment used to perform this treatment has gotten the all-clear from the FDA.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Side effects are rare with the O-Shot. When they do occur, they are usually mild and short-lived. These rare side effects include pinching or pain during the injection, urge incontinence after the injection, spotting and a feeling of fullness in the vagina due to temporary swelling.

IS THE O-SHOT A DRUG?

The O-Shot is not a drug. It is a form of regenerative therapy using platelets isolated from your own blood to promote natural tissue growth and vascularization of the vulva and vagina. That’s why there is no risk of allergic reactions and other adverse effects that may happen with drug therapies.

HOW CAN I BOOST MY RESULTS?

To get the most out of your treatment, we encourage you to stop smoking before and after your treatment, as smoking hinders the healing process. Drinking enough fluids may help speed up the results by increasing blood flow to the treatment area. We may also suggest stem cells, exosomes or Tempsure Vitalia to improve upon your results.

*Dr. Dhar recommends combining this treatment with the TempSure Vitalia Vaginal Rejuvenation for optimal results
