Aging, problems with the prostate gland and chronic health conditions can result in many issues with sexual functioning in men. From failing to get or maintain an erection, experiencing a change in sensation, a decrease in libido and general issues with performance, these changes can take their toll on your sexual satisfaction and overall well-being.

Male sexual dysfunction becomes more common as men grow older, although it can happen at any age. While fairly common, male sexual dysfunction isn’t necessarily normal and can signal problems with your general health. An inability to enjoy sex can also affect your self-esteem and well-being.

Despite these negative effects, many men do not seek treatment or even know that treatment options exist. But there is a simple solution to impaired sexual functioning, and it comes in the form of an injection called the P-Shot.

What It Is

The P-Shot, also called the Priapus Shot, is a natural, nonsurgical way to address male sexual dysfunction. Named after a fertility god in Greek mythology, this treatment can help you regain performance, restore intimacy and increase confidence. This minimally-invasive treatment harnesses the power of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to regenerate and rejuvenate tissues in the penis involved in sexual functioning. The treatment works to dramatically accelerate penile blood flow as well as the growth of new blood vessels. It may even enhance girth.

What the P-Shot Does

  • Treats erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Enhances penile blood flow for stronger, longer-lasting erections
  • Improves penile sensitivity
  • Increases sexual interest and desire
  • Boosts sexual stamina
  • Reduces penile curvature (from Peyronie’s disease)
  • Increases penile length and girth

Understanding Sexual Dysfunction in Men

Male sexual dysfunction refers to conditions defined by impaired sexual functioning. The most common of these are erectile dysfunction (ED), Peyronie’s disease (PD) and premature ejaculation (PE). For these problems to be diagnosed as male sexual dysfunction, the man or his partner must view his sexual functioning as impaired.

While anyone can develop sexual dysfunction, the prevalence of male sexual dysfunction increases with age. Half of all men experience some degree of ED after age 40, for example.

One of the biggest risk factors for this problem is poor health. Men with diabetes, hypertension, cancer and stroke, for example, are more likely to experience a range of sexual problems. Older men, especially those who smoke, drink alcohol and are sedentary, are also more likely to see a decline in their sexual functioning. This is simply due to the effects of ill health and lifestyle factors on blood vessels. Since good blood flow is essential for healthy sexual functioning, anything that impairs it will lead to problems with erections, desire and performance. Mental health issues can impact sexual functioning as well.

The treatment of male sexual dysfunction depends on the underlying reasons you’re experiencing it. Your doctor can help you manage this problem by addressing the root causes. The P-Shot is one of many treatment options that may help.

How the P-Shot Can Restore Your Sex Life

The P-Shot is a minimally invasive, quick and convenient treatment for male sexual dysfunction. It involves injecting PRP isolated from your own blood into the penile shaft to promote tissue regeneration and enhanced neovascularization. Patients usually need just one treatment to enjoy the benefits for many months.

The benefits of getting the P-Shot may include:

  • Improved blood flow to the penis
  • Stronger, longer-lasting erections
  • Enhanced penile sensitivity
  • Reduced penile curvature
  • Penile enhancement

Developed by Dr. Charles Runels — the inventor of the famous Vampire Facial and O-Shot for women — the P-Shot treatment is based on platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP was originally developed as an adjunctive treatment in regenerative medicine for conditions like muscle and bone injuries, osteoarthritis and complicated wounds. However, its use has now expanded beyond that, including in the enhancement of sexual wellness.

PRP is processed liquid from blood, containing up to 13 times the platelet concentration of normal blood. Platelets are blood cells involved in wound healing and tissue repair due to their high concentration of growth factors, cytokines and lysosomes. Injecting platelets into the penile shaft is believed to help regenerate its blood vessels, smooth muscles and connective tissues.

Who Is the Ideal P-Shot Candidate?

Any man experiencing the signs of sexual dysfunction may be a candidate for the P-Shot. It is important to first speak to a doctor before considering the P-Shot, who will let you know if this treatment is safe and appropriate in your case. Our expert team at Luminance will also check if you are a good candidate for this treatment. In general, the ideal P-Shot candidate is relatively healthy and experiencing the following problems:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Decreased sensitivity
  • Diminished orgasms
  • Peyronie’s disease (PD)

It is important to note that the P-Shot is not a permanent solution to the above issues. While the benefits can last for up to 12 months, getting this treatment every six to 12 months can help you enjoy the benefits longer. Consider whether you are up for getting repeat injections when choosing this treatment.

Who Should Not Get the P-Shot?

There is some evidence that the benefits of the P-Shot can be greatly diminished in smokers. That’s why we recommend quitting before investing in this treatment. You also need to have realistic expectations about the treatment and results. What that means is that you need to keep in mind that individual results vary with the P-Shot, as is the case with any medical treatment.

Other than that, the P-Shot has few contraindications. Patients who may not be suitable candidates are those with active infections, cancer, blood and bleeding disorders and anemia.

Benefits of the P-Shot Beyond Sexual Wellness

Sexual wellness is important for a person’s overall well-being. It helps you feel confident and happy in your own body and allows you to achieve deeper intimacy with your partner. Healthy sexuality is known to protect mental health and improve relationships, so there’s no doubt that the P-Shot can provide benefits beyond better sexual functioning: it can enhance your well-being, give you a boost of confidence, help you feel connected in your intimate relationships and reduce your stress levels.

The P-Shot Experience

The P-Shot is a simple, in-office procedure that takes an hour to complete. There are no side effects or downtime with this treatment. Patients usually need a single session, although some may need to come for repeat injections to achieve the maximum benefits of treatment.

After your P-Shot, it can take about three to four months to start seeing improvement. But once the treatment takes effect, the results will last for a year or longer. Here is what to expect when getting the P-Shot at Luminance in San Jose.

How to Prepare for Treatment

During your consultation, we will review your medical history and assess your symptoms to see if you are a good candidate for treatment. We may also order blood tests to see if this treatment can be performed safely. We will give you pre-treatment instructions to help you avoid side effects and to ensure you gain the most out of your treatment. These usually involve:

  1. Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, Naproxen and Aspirin for at least seven days before treatment. These can thin the blood and cause uncontrolled bleeding and bruising.
  2. Avoid supplements that are known blood thinners. Examples include vitamin E, flax oil, fish oil, curcumin, garlic and Ginkgo Biloba.
  3. If you need to use systemic corticosteroids, do so three weeks before your scheduled treatment.
  4. Come to your appointment well-hydrated for an easier blood draw.

What to Expect During Treatment

This treatment is performed in the office and takes approximately 60 minutes from start to finish.

Treatment starts with your provider drawing a small amount of blood from your arm to obtain the PRP solution. Your blood is placed into a centrifuge, which spins it at high speeds to separate blood plasma with the platelets from other components. This process takes about 15 minutes to complete.

The extracted PRP is extracted into a syringe. Your provider then applies a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort. The PRP is injected into five points along the penile shaft. This shouldn’t be painful thanks to the numbing cream; however, you may sense mild pinching with each injection.

You can resume your usual routine immediately after treatment, although you may want to avoid NSAIDs, alcohol, tobacco and corticosteroids for up to two weeks post-treatment.

What to Expect After Treatment

There is no downtime following a P-Shot. However, some patients are advised to use a vacuum pump for up to 20 minutes every day for two weeks to maximize their results. This medical device promotes blood flow to the penis, which can help make treatment more effective.

We may schedule a follow-up visit a month after your treatment to see your progress and provide additional instructions if necessary.

Your results should become noticeable three to four months after treatment, which is how long it takes for the PRP to produce changes on penile tissues. As the numerous growth factors stimulate cell renewal and neovascularization, patients notice that they have less trouble achieving or maintaining an erection, enhanced sensation and less painful erection if being treated for PD.

FAQs

HOW DOES THE P-SHOT WORK?

This quick, in-office procedure involves a simple blood draw in order to harvest the platelet-rich plasma in your blood. The PRP, with its potent growth factors, is then injected into the penis (including the corona) in order to activate tissue growth, stimulate nerves and blood vessels and heighten sensitivity and arousal.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE P-SHOT TREATMENT?

After your blood is drawn, it is spun in a centrifuge to harvest your PRP. Once numbing cream has been applied to your penis, making the procedure virtually painless, the P-Shot is administered. To ensure that the PRP’s growth factors are circulating through your penile tissues—so that you can achieve the most benefits—you’ll be given a penis pump to use at home after your treatment.

WHAT ARE RESULTS CAN THE P-SHOT ACHIEVE?

With the P-Shot you can experience increased firmness, increased penis size and longer-lasting, more dependable erections, as well as improved sensitivity and performance and renewed sexual confidence.

IS THE P-SHOT SAFE?

The P-Shot is a very safe procedure with no risk of allergic reaction since the PRP is derived from your own blood.

ARE THERE ANY ENHANCEMENT OPTIONS?

We can add on stem cells, Regenerative Serum or Zimmer Z Wave to improve upon your results.
